Bellingham Must Cut Out the Petulance to Secure a Key Role With Coach Tuchel.

For Bellingham to wants to force his way once again into the English strongest squad, the smart move to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. His response after noticing that the substitute board was about to come up following a night of mixed performance in the match against Albania was not good enough.

"I prefer not to overstate it but I stick to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect for the squad members who substitute on," Tuchel said. "Substitutions happen and you must accept them being a professional."

Bellingham has to learn. There was no call for an outburst. Harry Kane had recently scored to make the national team 2-0 up in a dead rubber fixture, the game had six minutes to go and the player, following an inconsistent display, received a caution for bringing down the Albanian striker. It was not a questionable change. In fact it would have been unwise for the manager to keep Bellingham on the pitch considering there was a chance the midfielder would rule himself out of the first match of the World Cup by picking up a another booking.

Shifting Focus to Himself

However, the player turned the spotlight on himself. It was impossible to miss the young midfielder's disappointment upon understanding that he was going to make way for a teammate. He threw his arms up and even though he shook Tuchel’s hand after making his way to the bench there was no doubt that the head coach was not impressed.

Here lies the test facing Bellingham. He applauded Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Kane to head in the team's second, but his other actions was self-defeating. It is not as if protesting was going to reverse the substitution. Tuchel has talked so much about respecting team hierarchies and the importance of acting professionally.

Facing Examination

The midfielder, omitted from the team last month, has been under scrutiny upon his return to the squad this month. In effect his place has been in question and he hasn't helped his case by reacting to being taken off as the side completed a flawless qualification run by seeing off a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.

Tactics and Formation

As a result it's unclear on how England function at their best with Bellingham in the team. The evidence here was open to interpretation. Tuchel tried new things by the coach at the start. Under him, England have gained the team organization and direction over the past few matches, building with a defensive midfielder, a No 8, a playmaker and specialist wingers, but there was a different feel in this match. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, Wharton started for the first time for England and the positioning of the defender as a makeshift midfielder created a passing resemblance to City's historic treble-winning side.

Inconsistent Display

His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for Eze after the break but often looked too desperate to impress. Several rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro against an opponent in the early stages. England were ragged during most of the second period. A scoring chance for the opponents followed Bellingham squandered possession. His booking was shown after he was dispossessed from Broja and fouled Broja.

Substitutes Decide

Ultimately the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel threw on Foden, who seemed better suited to the position occupied by Bellingham in the opening period, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka delivered a corner for the captain to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that set pieces will play a key role next summer.

Relationship Not Broken

Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The excellence of Rashford’s assist for Kane's goal was a little lost amid the drama of the substitution incident. At the end, the focus was on Bellingham. Tuchel came over to his side and pushed the player to acknowledge the away supporters. Their connection is not broken. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon the player just yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to give him a starring role is still uncertain.
