Hamilton Island, a Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination located on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard approvals from regulators.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a significant range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
